Born in the agricultural community of Dulce Nombre de Cartago, Costa Rica in January 1946, Max Rojas began studying painting in 1965 with Professor Marco Aurelio Aguilar. In 1967 he enrolled in Bellas Artes of the University of Costa Rica and has since gained a reputation for producing exciting work.

Realism the most noticeable factor in Rojas’ interpretation of his surroundings, the subject matter is evident. However his abstract paintings stand out as being conscious of space, surface, and color.

In either style, the images are always vigorous, energy-charged renditions of his beautiful country. The viewer is able to feel the humidity of the swollen clouds, the crispness of the first stream of light after the storm breaks, swirling hues as if caught in nature’s phenomena.

Rojas, besides being a capable painter, has the unique ability to become totally overwhelmed by his environment. This type of personal involvement produces art full of activity; be it conceptual or physical.

Rojas, one of Costa Rica’s established watercolorists has works in an impressive number of collections throughout the world.

Max Rojas, a long-time art instructor, gives classes full-time at his studio in Escazú. He is known not only for his excellence as an artist, but as a teacher.

Shown here is Waterfall, 57 x 76 cm., $750

"We really had a great time on the Art Tour. I was telling my mom that to just walk into a gallery and look at art seems so dry to me, but to see the artists and hear their stories and inspirations just gave the art such a personal feel to me!"

"Your Costa Rica Art Tour was truly a delight. You did a wonderful job in selecting a very talented group of artists with personalities to match. Both Marie and I hope to have the opportunity to share the experience again. Your idea of doing a photographic tour of San Jose sounds very appealing."

We hope to see you on the next Costa Rica Art Tour! You are sure to enjoy seeing the work of Costa Rican artists and artisans in their private studios and galleries! Private art tours take place in small groups of 10 persons maximum, so you will have the opportunity to speak directly with the artists. Painters, sculptors, ceramicists, stained glass artists, printmakers, all are included in the tours, as are traditional artisans such as mask-makers and blacksmiths.

All of our art tours are in private minibusses, and include lunch and translation into English. We can also arrange, at additional cost, transporation in private limousines.
