Adriana Castro's paintings and installations explore the world of information overwhelm and its cognitive implications. Here's a statement from the artist written for a recent project called "Diary of Images."

Memory

The Project "Diary of Images" is an extensive repertoire of recycled original images from diverse sources of information like magazines, books or impressions of “thumbnails” (indices of images) of internet search engines, as well as photographs, drawings or paintings on paper, piled up during the last years in my study. The sea of images in this linear project constructs sequences without a pre-established sense or conducting wire. Trimmed to a size of 3 x 3 centimeters, they are sufficiently small so that from a distance they are appreciated altogether like a totality and as the spectator approaches the work he or she can discover the details therein.

These incoherent rows of images represent the difficulties that all we must confront, sailing through a world where information has become a tool of power and at the same time of liberation, but only if we have the capacity to filter it through a barrier of images and text without sense. “Information overload” is already a recognized problem, nevertheless, we are barely beginning to know its negative effects and to investigate how we can extract the maximum benefit of the internet and information media in general.

Tired of this uncontrollable tide of images, “images of images” of one imagined world vision, I try to create, in this project, a shock of visual information, with the objective of disabling the spectator who constructs a message that is coming off of these images as independent units or in their organization--and who has to interpret from an arbitrary disposition like a totality wherein are perceived textures and patterns that hundreds of similar and different images seem to form when they are put together.

Shown: Diary of Images. 2003. Acrylic on canvas. $1500. One meter square.

"We really had a great time on the Art Tour. I was telling my mom that to just walk into a gallery and look at art seems so dry to me, but to see the artists and hear their stories and inspirations just gave the art such a personal feel to me!"

"Your Costa Rica Art Tour was truly a delight. You did a wonderful job in selecting a very talented group of artists with personalities to match. Both Marie and I hope to have the opportunity to share the experience again. Your idea of doing a photographic tour of San Jose sounds very appealing."

We hope to see you on the next Costa Rica Art Tour! You are sure to enjoy seeing the work of Costa Rican artists and artisans in their private studios and galleries! Private art tours take place in small groups of 10 persons maximum, so you will have the opportunity to speak directly with the artists. Painters, sculptors, ceramicists, stained glass artists, printmakers, all are included in the tours, as are traditional artisans such as mask-makers and blacksmiths.

All of our art tours are in private minibusses, and include lunch and translation into English. We can also arrange, at additional cost, transporation in private limousines.
